'Golden Girls' Lesbian Jokes

That The Golden Girls was ahead of its time in terms of social issues is not a question. One of the recurring social themes in the show was homosexuality and some of the funniest moments were the instances when lesbianism in particular became an issue... a confusing one more often than not. Here are two of those instances... both very funny.

Palin's 'poem'

I'm not a big fan of William Shatner, nor Conan, but this video is funny. They make Palin's last speech as governor of Alaska sound like the product of a poet who has spent too much time in an opium den.

Maybe Conan is right: 'It's a poem. It was always meant to be a poem.'

Landscapes

This blog that I found somewhere (most likely the Daily Dish) a few days ago has a very good collection of landscapes such as the one below. I don't know if they are altered in any way, but they are beautiful nonetheless. More photographs from the same artist in this other page.

Machines Outsmarting Man?

I think I may be one of the few that does not fear this scenario.

California Budget Woes

Why, oh, why is it that education and healthcare for the neediest are the first to go?

Orangeless County

I knew there was something wrong when the supermarket was selling me Florida oranges in Orange County, CA.

Moons Over My Hammy

As a big fan of Denny's 'Moons Over My Hammy' post-clubbing at 3 a.m., I have to say it is damn tasty. And I don't mind the salt... personally. Though I do understand this man's concerns with Denny's high-sodium diet and I have to say that it needs to stop. There's a salt shaker at every table, so no need to shove it down people's throats....

Massive lessons

As a former (and, de jure, still) Massachusetts resident, I took advantage of the state-issued, state-subsidized health insurance while I was unemployed during the summer prior to coming to California. Luckily, I did not need any medical attention and did not make a single visit to the doctor in those few months. Having insurance did, however, provide me great peace of mind, which may have contributed to my mental stability, if nothing else. I am certain many Massachusetts residents benefited in the same way. And I am even more certain that a similar healthcare plan on the federal level will provide again the same benefits for millions of Americans.

As this article shows, the Massachusetts plan wasn't infallible, but it wasn't a failure, either. It was a shot in the dark in a state and country where comprehensive insurance of that kind had no precedent. The time has come to expand on what we have learned and to make it possible for every American who desires health insurance to afford and obtain it.

Rushed conclusions

A few weeks ago, Rush Limbaugh told his deranged listeners that the cost of healthcare was driven up by 'those of [us] that regularly exercise,' 'all [us] exercise freaks, [we]'re the one putting stress on the healthcare system.' On the other side, those who are inactive probably don't even know their doctor's name.

Well, today the New York Times published this article saying that it is precisely the obese that spend more and money on healthcare and, I will dare say, are more likely to know their doctor's name, as a result.

Below is the only video I could find of Rush spewing that nonsense.

«Prometeu i lidhur»

Nuk hesht se jam krenar apo fodull,
por më coptohet zemra, kur e shoh
kaq të poshtëruar sot unë veten time.
Kush tjetër veç meje u siguroi
pushtet edhe fuqi hyjnive t'rinj?
Dhe hesht, veç hesht! Nevojë ju nuk keni
që t'ju tregoj. Çdo gjë e dini vetë?
Tani do t'ju rrëfej për mjerimet
Nuk dinin as shtëpi
qerpici të ndërtonin, se punimin
e drurit nuk e njihnin. Nëpër shpella
nën dhè ku s'futej dielli kurrë dergjeshin
si milingonat. Nuk i njihnin shenjat
që stinët i dallojnë në mes tyre:
as dimrin e acartë, as pranverën
plot lule, as edhe verën frutaplotë.
Kështu diktonin djersën kot më kot,
gjersa i parë u tregova lindjen
dhe perëndimin e yjeve
që janë shkenc' e shkencave, i shpika
për ta. U dhashë shkronjat, të renditura
pas radhës, duke u forcuar kujtesën,
që është mëma e të gjitha muzave,
i pari unë vura kafshët e egra
Jo. Askush veç meje
nuk i ka shpikur lundrat krahëlira
që çajnë detin me vërtik. Medet

***

S'qënkan fjalë boshe, se me të vërtetë
toka më rrëmet po trandet e dridhet.
Oshëtijnë bubullimat me gjëmime,
gjarpërojnë rrufetë me vetëtima,
gjuhë flake zigzag bëjnë nëpër qiell,
flakërimat verbojnë çdo gjë përqark!
Era pluhurin rrugës ngre në ajër,
shqota ulërin, vërshëllen me lemeri!
Shotë me shqotë po përpalsen, po përleshen
tok' e qiell e çdo gjë u përzie në botë!
Ja, ç'furtunë dërgoi Zeusi i tërbuar
shih eter i shenjtë
që më ndrite botën
skaj më skaj pështjell,
shihni si po vuaj
krejt pa pasur faj!
